Frequently asked questions
The stuff people ask us most. If you don't see your question, hit us up on the contact page.
General
What is Stock Academy?
A paper trading simulator for stocks, crypto, and forex. You get a virtual portfolio, make trades with fake money, and see how you'd actually do. Teachers can create classrooms and run leaderboards so students compete against each other. Think of it as a flight simulator, but for the stock market.
Is it really free?
Totally free. No premium tier, no credit card, no "free trial that expires in 7 days" nonsense. We built this for students and teachers who want to learn how markets work without a paywall in the way.
Do I need to use real money?
Not a single cent. Every trade uses virtual dollars. You can't deposit real money, you can't withdraw real money. Your bank account is completely out of the picture. That's the whole point — learn the mechanics without any financial risk.
What assets can I trade?
US stocks, major cryptocurrencies, and forex pairs. So you can go long on AAPL, grab some Bitcoin, or trade EUR/USD — all in one app. We're always looking at adding more, but that covers the big three categories most people want to practice with.
Classrooms
How do classrooms work?
A teacher creates a classroom and gets a join code. Students punch in the code and they're in. From there, everyone trades on their own portfolio but the classroom has a shared leaderboard. Great for finance classes, investment clubs, or just a group of friends who want to see who actually knows what they're doing.
Can I see what my students are trading?
The leaderboard shows portfolio performance for everyone in the classroom. You can see who's up, who's down, and by how much. It keeps things competitive and gives you a quick snapshot of how the class is doing overall.
How many students can join a classroom?
Right now there's no hard cap. We've tested it with large groups and it holds up fine. If you're running a massive lecture hall and worried about scale, reach out on the contact page and we'll make sure everything's good on our end.
Technical
Where does the market data come from?
We pull data from professional-grade financial data providers. Prices are close to real-time — there may be a short delay depending on the asset, but it's accurate enough for paper trading and learning. This isn't made-up data; it reflects what's actually happening in the markets.
Is there a web version?
Not yet. Stock Academy is a mobile app right now. A web version is something we'd like to build eventually, but no timeline on that. Mobile-first made sense for us since most students already have their phones on them 24/7.
What happens to my portfolio if the app updates?
Nothing bad. Your portfolio, trade history, and classroom memberships are all stored on our servers. App updates don't touch your data. Just update like normal and everything will be right where you left it.
